Every once in a while we come across something we think is really worth passing along. Over the past few years, Sherry Mayrent (our program bought and used her klezmer sheet music arrangements for years!) went on a buying spree. Old 78 Yiddish and klezmer reordings. A newly released three-CD set produced by Henry Sapoznik, the recordings were remastered and 67 tracks, including 42 never before reissued recordings were compiled.
On August 7, 2010, the Wall Street Journal’s Jazz writer, Nat Hentoff, reviewed it and gave it a thumbs up. For the time being (until the WSJ decides to charge for it) the review titled, Time-Travelers From a Golden Age, can be read, in its entirety on WSJ’s website. You can find it here.
‘Cantors, Klezmorim and Crooners 1905-1953,’ a 3-CD set of U.S. recordings, can be purchased at Amazon.com for $22.99 & is eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping.
THANK YOU!!! This year was an amazing year for our program. I just got off the phone with Matty; as he and I tried to list all of the great times we had this year we lost count. He says that the recordings we made last month sound terrific. A musician friend of his walked into the house while he was doing some of the mixing and she wanted to know what CD he was listening to. You folks are great klezmorim and together we make quite a beautiful noise. Its exciting to imagine how much happiness our music might bring to people next year when our CD is complete. It’s also very gratifying to look back on this past year and reflect on how many people were touched this past school-year by the music we make.

My Dear Klezmorim,
First of all, thank you so much for the spectacular job you did last Sunday at our recording session. Matty is confident that we have some top-notch material to work with in making The Westchester Klezmer Program’s first CD. I’m grateful to all of you who participated, especially those of you who stayed for the entire day. I also want to thank a few folks by name –
- Lee Parker for capturing some great photos
- Kathy Riter for making the best carrot cake ever for our lower band musicians
- J-Ro for his assistance with engineering
- Matty for all his preparatory work for the session and all the work that faces him as he makes our tracks shine as bright as possible.
You all deserve a big round of applause and a huge thank-you for all of the work that you put in to our recording. If I neglected to give you an appropriate shout-out please accept my apology. And speaking of apologies, I’m sorry that I didn’t order more pizza for our break. Be well, everybody and..,Gut Shabbes,
Kenny
All good things must come to an end– and our old website is no exception. This summer we’re going to give klezkidz.org a face lift. We’re convinced we can make it easier to use, easier to navigate, and more interactive. If anyone has any interest in helping out, we’ll need your assistance at the beginning of June. No techie experience or expertise required! Please contact Eric Zaidins, our technology chair, by phone at 914-861-KLEZ or by by email. Thanks!
Khevre,
I’ve attached most of the parts in PDF format to this post. The only part that is missing is the keyboard part — I will try to get that out tomorrow. The bass part is included in this batch, but I neglected to include the chord symbols. I will send out a new bass tomorrow with the chord symbols included. I will be attempting to send out an MP3 of the computer playing the full arrangement, however, due to the size of the file it might not travel well. Tomorrow I will also send out a list of all the tunes that everyone should be familiar with for next Sunday’s recording session. Lemme know if you have any problems with your attachment. And, as always, please do not share this copyrighted material with anybody outside of our program. Thank you.
Shavua Tov,
Kenny
