understanding klezmer

In order to play klezmer, of course one has to be familiar enough with its forms and rhythms by listening to it, by experiencing it, by being immersed in it. To truly be a "klezmer," ya' gotta' spend some time studying its nuts and bolts.

Modes:  

-

Major
- Minor:
natural, harmonic, and melodic
- Ashkenazic:
  Ahava Raba (also called Freygish), altered Phrygian (Beregowski) or Hijaz (Arab mode), Misheberech, and Adonoy moloch
Rhythms:
Nigun, Freylekh, Bulgar, Chosidl, Hora, Terkish, Sirba, Sher, Taksim, and the Doina.
